Model, but in 1934 a change was made which altered its external appearance.

Mauser continued to produce P.38's and did not adapt to starting serial numbers over again when the year changed. The first variation of these guns with byf 43 slides will be the same as guns with byf 42 slides but no e/135 parts. The serial number range is 4958a-2119f with 50,000 produced. 5 or 6 digit serial number on diagonal flat 50 - 1000 meter sight small ring hammer, early style hole through safety knob full serial number in two places on back 'step' frame; lanyard ring pivots fore & aft walnut grip panels with 30 to 36 lines no factory markings here (there may be military or police unit marks stamped on later).
